More Illusions Than Realities

Punchbowl

In this Gulf of uncertain light there were more illusions than realities.

~Steinbeck, The Pearl

Suspicion, greed, resentment, as Kino learned, are the essential elements of the undoing of the fabric of happiness, contentment, hope, a community and even oneself. As unlikely as it seems, maybe the most unhappy people in the entire world live in a paradise.

Piano and some strings. That Yamaha grand sound is something I can’t get enough of and polishing anything on keys takes a lot of repetition and practice, especially since I’m a one-take kinda player. There are, turns out, so many similarities to a guitar in my own mind, though.

But the strings are probably just from too much film – a self-confessed junkie – or the 21-lecture series on ‘Wolfie‘ (Mozart) I was attempting to casually wade through at the time, the S.F. conservatory professor focusing several discussions on piano/orchestral work, demonstrating common techniques as he went. It all may have made so much more sense if I understood more about music than ‘hey that sounds pretty good I suppose’, which is exactly how this couple of tracks worth of effort came together.

photo: 55.53, -130.792: ‘Punchbowl’: Unlike the relatively short paddle from Winstanley the day before in a bucket-rain, this clear and warm sunny summer day with no wind, and the clarity of the water despite its depth, mixed with the colors and complexities of what the eye could almost detect rushing past far below, beneath the silent gliding keel. The result was a sensation, perception – an illusion – of silent flight.
