How easy it is to lose oneself
in a kelp forest. Between
canopy leaves, sunlight filters thru
the water surface; nutrients
bring life where there’d other-
wise be barren sea; a vast eco-
system breathes. Each
being being being’s link.
~ Jeffrey Yang, ‘Kelp’
photo: more than once the wind came up or it was time for a break when out paddling a kayak, and it became habit to look for surface signs of underwater bull kelp ‘forests’, almost always a calmer spot to hang out or even to lay the fronds across the foredeck, which would serve as a very solid point of anchor, from which – in this one-off instance from around 2012 – a camera was blindly aimed into the darkness.
