That Morning On Klakas

Klakas Sunrise
Klakas Sunrise

55.013721, -132.395197: There are, I now know for certain, places where the sounds of humans are not found at all. The ravens moved on, the bears were occupied with the fish run, the humpbacks set the pace after the kayak was loaded, a reverberating stillness and a brightly-burning sun of gold in my mind as that morning of perfect wildness, just another creature out here in the woods.

Back home in a very simple studio, creating my own noises with a synthesizer, guitar, some found sounds the local ravens contributed, and a few digital effects I was learning at the time in Bitwig 4.

photo: since the task was to monitor the silence within the boundaries of the wilderness area – quantified by counting aircraft, boat, chainsaw or any other human-made sounds – this may look like daydreaming but it’s actually official business.
